Patterns in environmental quality and sustainability

- Insolation is the incoming solar radiation.

- There is a redistribution of energy from higher to lattitudes (equator to polar) by wind and ocean circulations.

- The greenhouse effect is the process by which certain gases (water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and CFCs) allow short-wave radiation from the sun to pass through the atmosphere and heat up the earth, but trap an increasing proportion of long-wave radiation from the earth.

- Human activities increases the amount of greenhouse gases and enhances the greenhouse effect.

- Heat travels through radiation, convection and conduction.
